TODOS 2021 Conference and Preconference

Save the date for TODOS 2021: June 28-30, 2021. Speakers selected for the postponed TODOS 2020 conference will have the opportunity to adapt their presentations for TODOS 2021, and the keynote speaker will continue to be Julia Aguirre. The Preconference is scheduled for June 28th. Registration for the conference and preconference will be available in late Fall 2020.

TEEM 11, No. 2 Is Available!

The first issue of a two part Teaching for Excellence and Equity in Mathematics (TEEM) Special Issue titled Special Issue on Multicultural Learners: Translanguaging is now available. This issue is also posted on the TODOS website in the members' area. The second issue titled Special Issue on Multicultural Learners: Multilingual Practices will be available towards the end of September.

TODOS Live! Recordings

TODOS Live! has been active the last several months. If you've missed any of the sessions that occurred since the beginning of June 2020, eight sessions in total, you can still view them, as all of them have been recorded. Presenters for these sessions included Jim Ewing, Amy Brooks, Maria del Rosario Zavala, Margarita Barraza, Marian Dingle, Linda Fulmore, Rochelle Gutiérrez, Luz Maldonado Rodríguez, Teruni Lamberg, Dave Ebert, and Cecilio Dimas. The next TODOS Live! will occur in late September. If you wish to present for TODOS Live!, contact the organizers.

Parents as Partners Commentary Released

The third commentary supporting the TODOS 2020 Position Statement is now available. Black, Indigenous, and Latinx Parents as Partners in Mathematics Education advocates for a restructuring of the school-parent relationship. This paper is a call for educators to listen and learn from parents and welcome them into schools and classrooms, a call for parents to connect and organize around their frustrations and strengths with schooling and in learning mathematics, and a call for educators to encourage the participation of parents at all levels.

TODOS 2020 Position Statement/Commentaries

Now is the time to read the TODOS 2020 Position Statement The Mo(ve)ment to Prioritize Antiracist Mathematics again. Three of the four commentaries supporting the position statement are published. The first two, Centering Our Humanity: Addressing Social and Emotional Needs in Schools and Mathematics Classrooms and Student and Family-Centered Mathematics Assessment were announced in early August, and the third one is just released (see the cell to the left of this one). The fourth is coming soon!

Call for Nominations - 2021 TODOS Board Election

Do you know someone who would bring valuable experience, perspective, and judgment to the TODOS Board? The Board needs a broad representation of TODOS membership to enrich its discussions, inquiries, and decisions. Identify energetic and committed individuals who are qualified to assume leadership roles in the organization. Details on the process, procedures, qualifications and responsibilities are included in the call for nominations. Deadline for nominations is October 15th.

Call for Proposals: TODOS Strand for NCTM in Atlanta

TODOS has been invited to contribute to the 2021 NCTM Annual Meeting and Exposition in Atlanta, GA, September 22-25, 2021 by accepting up to four 60-minute-sessions and two 75-minute gallery workshops. Consider submitting a proposal for the TODOS Strand. Please review the guidelines and submit your proposal soon. You can make a difference! Similar to the past, you need to submit your proposal through the NCTM portal first. Deadline to submit as part of the TODOS Strand is September 10th.

The August community read is on the four commentaries. For the week of August 17th, read the first two commentaries and tweet out your thoughts using #TODOSSummerRead. For the week of August 24th, read the third and fourth commentaries and tweet out your thoughts using #TODOSSummerRead. Join TODOS in a community Twitter chat on Monday, August 31st at 5:00 PM Pacific Time. The fourth commentary will be sent to TODOS members via the listserv when it is published.

Rehumanizing Mathematics

Are you interested in engaging in conversations about anti-racist practices and work in math education? If so, join the California Mathematics Council for a book study of Rehumanizing Mathematics for Black, Indigenous, & Latinx Students. Order your book today. Equity in Education Series: Past CASIO-TODOS Webinars

The first two Equity in Education Series occurred in early August, with over 120 participants attending each session. View the webinars that are so relevant in today’s context. Black, Indigenous, and Latinx Parents as Intellectual Resources: From Optional to Imperative was co-presented by Marta Civil and Maria del Rosario Zavala, and Rehumanizing Schools: Rights of the Learner was presented by Olga Torres. Information on the next CASIO-TODOS webinars will be announced on the TODOS website.

NCTM 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award  

TODOS Member Karen Karp from Louisville, KY, is a recipient of NCTM’s 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award. Karen has dedicated her life to the intersection of mathematics education and special education. One of her colleagues said, “Dr. Karen Karp has the unique gift and ability to profoundly impact teachers by opening their eyes to see their students' mathematical capabilities and helping teachers to gain the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to support each and every learner.” Congratulations, Karen!

2020 E. Glenadine Gibb Achievement Award

Bill Jasper, a long-term TODOS member, was recently awarded the 2020 E. Glenadine Gibb Achievement Award for leadership at the state and national levels by the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The award highlighted Bill’s leadership, especially in the area of supporting math learning for English Language Learners and as an active member of TODOS, that has greatly impacted possibilities for students. Congratulations, Bill!

Equity in Youth Programs Toolkit

The National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity announces the Equity in Youth Apprenticeship Programs toolkit. The toolkit is designed to assist leaders to build and scale equitable youth apprenticeship programs. It equips them with the skills to recognize and mitigate structural barriers and bias in youth apprenticeship programs in three key areas: Access, Belonging, and Continuous Improvement. Call for Submissions for New Books (PreK-2, 3-5, and 6-8)

Mathematics Lessons to Explore, Understand, and Respond to Social Injustice is issuing a call for submissions. You are invited to submit one or more original mathematics activities, lessons, or units that have a focus on issues of social justice and/or teaching mathematics for empowerment and liberation. Go to the letter and template for Grades PreK-2, Grades 3-5, and Grades 6-8. Deadline for submissions is October 1st.

Call for Abstracts: Educational Studies in Math

Call for abstracts for the special issue in Educational Studies in Mathematics "Race, Racism, and Racialization in Mathematics Education: Global Perspectives," is out. This special issue seizes on this moment of contestation and protest and provides an opportunity to highlight how the meanings for race have been articulated, re-articulated, and negotiated within and across global contexts, in the spaces of mathematics education. Deadline for abstracts: October 1st.
