Message from President-Elect Florence Glanfield

I identify as an Indigenous person, a citizen of the Métis Nation of Alberta; a mathematics teacher, educator, researcher; a university administrator; and as President-Elect of TODOS. In May 2021 I had the honour of moderating a panel discussion around equity, diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in mathematics, science, and technology education. In Support of the CMC Statement

TODOS: Mathematics for ALL stands in support of the California Mathematics Council’s (CMC) statement condemning the mockery and marginalization of Native American culture through chants, costume, and dance. Once again, we are reminded that often ‘business as usual’ and ‘actions unchecked’ can turn out to be harmful. TODOS Live! on December 1 at 4:00 PM Pacific

The next TODOS Live! will be held December 1 at 4:00 PM Pacific Time. Hector Rosario will present CYFEMAT: International Network of Math Circles and Festivals. Join TODOS for an informative session about the outreach work of CYFEMAT across Latin America, Africa, and the US. This currently happens in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, with plans for more languages. This session will share how to organize and run math festivals or math circles locally. Register today!

Prioritizing Antiracist Mathematics: Act Now

Join a virtual space for reflection and planning around the TODOS position statement, The Mo(ve)ment to Prioritize Antiracist Mathematics, and the four supporting commentaries. Be inspired by panelists who will share their antiracism work. Collaborate with others to decide next action steps. The workshop will be held December 4, 2021 from 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM Pacific time. TODOS Members Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Three 2021 Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented on Friday, November 19 during the NCTM 2021 Fall Virtual Conference: Marta Civil, Elizabeth Fennema, and Steven Leinwand. Two of the three are long time TODOS Members—Marta and Steve. The award honors NCTM members who have exhibited a lifetime of achievement in mathematics education at the national level. All have a minimum of 25 years of distinguished service to mathematics education. Congratulations!

Volunteer at the CMC-N Conference at Asilomar

All sessions at the California Mathematics Council-North (CMC-N) Conference will be held on the Asilomar Conference grounds. TODOS will have an exhibit booth in Merrill Hall. This year, exhibits will open early at 1:30 PM on Friday December 3 and will be open for two days. Volunteer to staff the booth for two hours or more and share your passion for TODOS’ mission and goals with attendees! Encourage your friends and colleagues to visit the TODOS Booth.

UArizona CRR's 18th Annual MEAD Conference

The UArizona Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) is hosting this year's Mathematics Educator Appreciation Day Conference (MEAD) virtually on Saturday, January 22, 2022. Fawn Nguyen is the keynote speaker, a master teacher and math leader with over 30 years of teaching experience. This year’s event will be free for all Arizona Educators and $125 for everyone else. Consider Submitting to Ear to the Ground

Ear to the Ground department of Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK–12 (MTLT) features voices working in various corners of the mathematics education world. Consider submitting a 500-word manuscript about exciting practices, ideas, and notions that can move the field forward. NCTM strongly encourages underrepresented PreK-12 teachers and teacher educators who represent the growing diversity of our classrooms to submit.

Free Virtual Conference: Multilingual Students

The second annual Ellevation Education’s Impact Conference is a free virtual event taking place  December 6, 7, and 9 featuring experts in supporting the needs of multilingual learners. Impact is an opportunity for classroom teachers, administrators, curriculum and instruction specialists, and other advocates to join in a community of professional learning to furthering progress in multilingual education. AWM Announces Louise Hay Award

The Association of Women in Mathematics announces that the 2022 Louise Hay Award for Contributions to Mathematics Education will be presented to Vilma Mesa, University of Michigan. Mesa is recognized for her distinguished contributions to mathematics education research at the collegiate level, for her teaching and mentorship, and advocacy. She’s an active member of the University of Michigan Women of Color in the Academy Project (center of picture wearing a green v-neck top).

Tenure-Track Position at the University of Virginia

The Curriculum Instruction & Special Education Department in the School of Education & Human Development at the University of Virginia recently posted an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, seeking someone with expertise in elementary mathematics education intersecting with race and culturally responsive teaching, learning, and curriculum. Recommend current graduates who have experience at the elementary school level. 

Nominate a STEM Mentor for a Presidential Award

Individuals and organizations in all public and private sectors who have provided exceptional STEM or STEM-related mentoring in formal and/or informal settings are eligible for the PAESMEM award. Applicants must have at least five years of sustained, exceptional mentoring with demonstrated impact on individuals historically underrepresented in STEM. Go to website for details.

Many of you are making great strides in supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion in your efforts.
