TODOS End of Year Highlights

The end of year highlights for the 2021-2022 year are included in the first three rows of this May 2022 Enews. Thanks to Past-President Linda Fulmore for compiling them. The Past-President’s Remarks have not been edited to fit the cell, but there’s a link to the full message. The other highlights have been edited to fit the cells. Past-President’s Remarks

My two-year term as President of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL has ended with so much gratitude. With your support, TODOS has accomplished more than could have ever been expected during these unprecedented times. Prioritizing Antiracist Mathematics Webinar

This webinar was a virtual space for reflection and planning around the TODOS Position paper, The Mo(ve)ment to Prioritize Antiracist Mathematics and the four commentaries. Attendees had the opportunity to make connections and find space and time for some healing and networking. The webinar also provided opportunities for attendees to plan actions steps that would create movement for themselves and those they serve.

TOD∀XS=

The mission of the newest Special Interest Group TOD∀XS=, which follows the mission of TODOS, is to advocate for equity and high-quality mathematics education for all students, in particular 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Agender, and other non-normative gender identities and sexualities) students. Future activities include contributing to TODOS webinars (by inviting presenters), podcasts, and blogs that create supportive mathematics classrooms for 2SLGBTQIA+ students.

Heising-Simons Award

TODOS received a two-year award of $100,000 total from Heising-Simons in June 2021 to develop and strengthen its infrastructure to escalate its efforts as an advocate for equity. H-S also funded a consultant to work with TODOS on organizational assessment and development. Efforts include moving TEEM to OJS, organizing TODOS recordings in Vimeo, updating and streamlining the website, discussing fund development ideas, and creating a Professional Development Handbook as a guide to provide professional development to schools, districts, and other entities. 

Podcasts, TODOS Live!, and TODOS/CASIO Webinars

The TODOS Podcast is in its 3rd season. An emphasis has been to highlight emerging important topics and the contributions of scholars of color. This season Jon Oaks was featured to discuss the TODOS position statement on 2SLGBTQIA+ peoples. Webinar topics ranged from explicit connections to the TODOS 2020 Antiracist position paper, topics of diversity and inclusion, and community mathematics events. Data Science Literacy was the topic of the joint TODOS/CASIO webinars hosted by CASIO. All TODOS webinars are recorded.

Where is Manuel?

This vignette was inspired by stories shared about young people during virtual learning. Its purpose is to reject claims of “learning loss” and present a perspective that illuminates the opportunities students may have had for authentic learning outside of the schoolhouse. Where is Manuel? focuses on the joy of mathematics.

New Position Statement

Positioning Multilingual Students for Success in Mathematics, the joint statement with NCSM prioritizes policies and practices that position multilingual learners (i.e., children learning mathematics in languages that differ from their first language) so that they can access, engage, and thrive in mathematics education.

TODOS Live!

Join the June 8 TODOS Live! at 4:00 pm Pacific Time. Jenny Cheng and Cecilio Dimas, presenting My Students Scored 0%! What Should I Do Next?, will explore the power of using students’ thinking to address emerging understandings. Participants will engage in a low-floor/high-ceiling task using a lesson structure with embedded Math Language Routines to contextualize student thinking for purposeful next steps. Register now!

Changes to the TODOS Live! Videos

As part of the Heising-Simons grant, in an effort to increase the usefulness of the TODOS Live! and other TODOS webinar video recordings for members, the video Task Force is in the process of establishing a system to organize its videos in Vimeo so that members can move about to easily find sections of interest. Toward Equity in Mathematics Education

The Call for Papers of this special issue, Toward Equity in Mathematics Education: Multiple Research Perspectives, focuses on the longstanding challenge to provide high-quality teaching and learning opportunities in an equitable manner to all children. They seek articles that report individual studies or summarize bodies of research on this theme. Deadline for submissions is May 31, 2023.

Navigating Math Identity As An Educator

This blog written by TODOS member Joslyn Richardson on math identity addresses how she “helps students see math as a friend, not the enemy” by exploring her own experiences as a math learner. Reflecting on her own experiences with math as a student, she knew she had her work cut out for her and was determined to help her students develop healthier relationships with the subject.

Listen to AMTE’s latest Teaching Math Teaching Podcast episode. Courtney Koestler and Eva Thanheiser’s Building Community to Center Equity and Justice in Mathematics Teacher Education includes their experiences and advice on being a mathematics teacher educators to center equity and justice. AMTE also released a Statement on Equitable and Inclusive Mathematics Teaching and Learning. Download and read the full statement.
