From the TODOS President

Happy New Year! Some might say that it’s too late for this greeting (if you celebrate on the Gregorian calendar). But, it is just in time if one celebrates New Year on the Orthodox calendar (January 14) and it is a bit early if one celebrates on the Lunar calendar (January 22). While it is a New Year, I’m writing this on the late Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday. I am drawn to Martin Luther King’s commitment to equity and his courage. TODOS 2023 Conference Registration

The TODOS 2023 Conference is five months away. Have you made plans to attend the conference? You can always make it a vacation with family and/or friends and arrive early or stay after to enjoy the surroundings in Old Town Albuquerque. You will receive a message next week that will include more specific information about registration and other details. The program committee is in the process of reviewing proposals. General registration is $399. Look for the email next week!

2023 TODOS: Mathematics for ALL Board Elections!

The TODOS Board Elections 2023 will be held February 1 - 28, 2023. The slate of candidates for President-Elect and two Director positions and their information are available on the TODOS website. Election voting is online only and held via ElectionBuddy during the month of February 2023. TODOS Members will receive an email ballot from ElectionBuddy on February 1. For any questions or a missing ballot, contact the Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee.

TODOS Live! February 8, 2023

The next TODOS Live! is on Wednesday, February 8 at 4:00 PM Pacific. Understanding Stealth Racist Abuse in College Algebra will be presented by Naomi Nishi. Because race as a topic doesn't tend to come up in the mathematics classroom, the ways that race and racism work in the classroom are often unseen and not considered. Naomi Nishi will describe what stealth racist abuse is and how it works in the classroom. Register now!

Teacher Award Applications Are Now Open for 2023!

These awards honor teachers who are TODOS members committed to equity in math education. Both awards include funds to attend the TODOS 2023 Conference that will be held June 21-23, 2023 in Albuquerque. For more detailed award information and application, go to the Susie W. Håkansson Teacher Award and the Cathy Kinzer Memorial Professional Development Award. The submission deadline for both is March 1, 2023.

TODOS 20-Year Anniversary Celebration!

TODOS began in 2003 and has been very active over the years. Throughout 2023, the Enews will include past highlights of TODOS, Sankofa. Sankofa is a word in the Twi language that means “go back and get it” or “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” The spirit of Sankofa encompasses taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present to make progress in the future, i.e., learn from the past in order to move forward.

Just Equations Conference: March 7-9, 2023

Strong quantitative reasoning skills are essential to navigating today’s society. Yet math policies, practices, and perceptions often turn students off math and create roadblocks to higher education. Join Just Equations  on March 7-9, 2023, for their fifth-annual Mathematics of Opportunity Conference. This free, virtual event will continue conversations about how math education can uplift and empower students, resulting in deeper math learning and more equitable access to opportunities.

M3 Challenge: Math $100K Scholarship Contest

MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge is a free online contest for high schoolers. Teams solve an open-ended problem in 14 hours, together or collaborating online, teacher need not be present. $100,000+ awarded annually; $1.75 million+ awarded to date. Extra awards for teams doing (optional) code. Culminates with an in-person, all expenses paid final event in New York City for finalist teams. Go to rules, resources, and registration for details. Register by February 24, 2023; Challenge weekend is March 3-6, 2023.

CANMEE Convening and CANMEE Symposium

The California Action Network for Mathematics Excellence and Equity (CANMEE) invites you to attend the virtual CANMEE Symposium to be held February 2 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM and the in-person CANMEE Convening to be held March 29-30 in Santa Cruz, CA. There is no deadline to register for the no cost Symposium. Deadline to register for the Convening is February 24, and the cost is $500 until February 14. TEEM Volume 14, No. 1 Will Be Ready Next Week 

The next issue of TEEM will be posted soon. All members will receive a message that will include a PDF of the issue. TODOS is currently in the process of switching to Open Journal Systems (OJS), and the editorial will mention this change. Submission guidelines for future issues of TEEM are changing, so be on the lookout for your copy next week.
