Call for A Collective Action!
TODOS President Diane Kinch sent a letter to TODOS members earlier this month on a Call for a Collective Action to Develop Awareness: Equity and Social Justice in Mathematics Education. The website and the president's letter provide details of the Call for a Collective Action, including the mathematics education organizations participating, and the monthly readings. In addition, TODOS has established a Social Circle (discussion forum) for each month's reading or collection of readings.

The reading for October 2016 is TEEM 7, the Special Issue, Mathematics Education Through the Lens of Social Justice. The targeted questions for this reading are included in the attached. The Social Circle for this reading will be added on the website in October. Even if you don't read every article in TEEM 7, you can always include your comments in the Social Circle on the articles that you did read. Participate in the Call for a Collective Action!

TODOS Speakers at CMC-South Conference
Speakers for the TODOS strand at the California Mathematics Council-South Conference will be Linda Fulmore (session 514), Steven Krolikowski (session 763), and Nora Ramirez (session 833) with Susie Håkansson (session 704) as a featured speaker (see online program). NCSM Elections! Remember to Vote!
The NCSM elections are open and will close October 15th for the following positions: Second Vice President and Regional Directors for Central 2, Eastern 2, and Western 2. All NCSM members will vote for the second vice president and members residing in the above regions will be voting for their regional director. TODOS members who are candidates include: Bill Barnes, Second Vice President; Sharon Rendon, Central 2; Lynn Columba and Sue Vohrer, Eastern 2; and Kathlan Latimer, Western 2.

What Does It Mean to Be Fluent in Mathematics?
In 2012, then NCTM President Linda Gojak responded to a frequently asked question, "What does it mean to be fluent in mathematics?" Building fluency involves more than speed and accuracy. It must reach beyond procedures and computation. The article elaborates on this topic and provides several examples.

University of Illinois Adds Course in Minority Culture
University of Illinois has added a course in U.S. minority culture to the core curriculum for undergraduate students in hopes of helping better prepare students to live in an increasingly diverse society. Students will now take one Western culture course, a non-Western culture course, and the U.S. minority culture course.
